In excellent news for public safety, the Paikmal Police successfully busted an illegal operation in Sodha village, securing a significant haul of controlled cough syrup often misused as a narcotic. The raid resulted in the seizure of a massive 550 bottles of Eskuf cough syrup, which contains the controlled substance Codeine Phosphate, and the arrest of one individual.
The operation, carried out by a dedicated team led by Sub-Inspector Kailash Chandra Pradhan, the Officer-in-Charge of Paikmal Police Station, followed a crucial tip-off. The team moved swiftly to raid the residence of 37-year-old Dinesh Behera.
Upon searching the premises, officers discovered the large consignment cleverly concealed. The 550 bottles were packed into two plastic bags and hidden away beneath a staircase, clearly intended for illegal distribution.
The Dangers of Misuse
The seized Eskuf syrup contains Codeine Phosphate and Triprolidine Hydrochloride. While codeine is a legitimate ingredient used for suppressing coughs, it is also an opioid. This means that when consumed in high quantities without a prescription, it can produce a euphoric effect, leading to serious addiction and dangerous health issues.
The crackdown highlights the continued vigilance of local police against the rising illicit trade of these controlled pharmaceutical substances, which pose a significant risk, particularly to younger members of the community.
Charges and Ongoing Investigation
The accused, Dinesh Behera, was immediately taken into custody. Police also seized his mobile phone, SIM card, and a sum of ₹2,250 in cash found on the premises, suggesting involvement in the active sale of the contraband.
A case has been formally registered under the relevant laws, including Section 21(b) of the NDPS Act (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act) and Section 111(2)(b) of the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita). Authorities confirmed that Mr. Behera already has a criminal history involving multiple past cases.
The investigation is far from over. Paikmal police are now focused on tracing the origin of the seized bottles and dismantling the broader network responsible for supplying illegal cough syrup across the region. Their efforts demonstrate a strong commitment to keeping controlled substances out of the wrong hands and protecting the health of the community.
